How to attract talents to the mining sector - and how to make them thrive

What is key to attract talents to industry related educations at universities? And how do we make sure they end up in the mining industry? Unlocking the full potential of the mining sector requires a strategic approach to talent acquisition and retention. How do we captivate the brightest minds within university corridors and guide them towards a fulfilling career in mining?

Svemin, the Swedish Association for mines, mineral and metal producers, works to highlight the mining industry's gender equality work and the competent women who already work at our member companies, as well as to make more women see the industry as attractive. Therefore, Svemin hosts the Swedish section of the international network Women in Mining.

More to be done

Women in the Swedish mining industry still represent only 37% of white collars and 19% of the blue collars of all employees (2023). To remain competitive in a global market, the industry needs to be attractive to all talents and potential employees with the right skills. Not least when the industry now faces the challenge of an enormous need for skills.

  • I think the mining industry can sometimes be perceived as difficult to enter, and perhaps especially as a woman. We need to find new ways to spread knowledge and share experiences. Show good examples and simply make more noise, says Maria Sunér, CEO of Svemin.

Women in Mining Sweden works for a more equal industry and at the same time wants to emphasize the importance of knowledge that comes from experience.

But experience has to start somewhere. Hence, we ask ourselves - what is key to attract talents to industry related educations at universities? And how do we make sure they end up in the mining industry, and not least, are willing to stay there?

  • There are great opportunities for development in the mining sector. There are huge projects going on and skills are needed across a wide range of work areas. The mining industry is very versatile, which I think should be demonstrated at an earlier stage, during university studies, says Maria.
